COMPOSITION EXHIBIT: PRODUCTION (2)

Record of April 2017.

So, I ended up choosing to be in Production Team. I was in the Creative Direction team for my past event, so you could say I'm familiar with the responsibilities. I did not remember how it happened, but I ended up being the team leader (Was it after a discussion? Chosen randomly? Appointed by the others?).

Okay, so even though the event is good to go at Paragon, the venue still has to approve what kind of concept we are doing. The marketing team has proposed a minimalist, modern, geometric concept. At the first weeks of the term (around 5 - 10 April), after discussing with our lecturer and scouring through Pinterest, we made some designs based on Ikea shelves that will look like cages. Here was the rendered image:

But unfortunately this wasn't approved. Paragon didn't like the metal material. We thought about changing the shelves to wood. Although, I still don't like this idea because (1) Expensive. I don't even have to see a quote, I know I can get like, 4 Michael Kors bags with the money we would spend. (2) High maintenance. I can't imagine how setup and dismantling will look like. (3) Not exactly environmentally friendly because I know no one who wants to use a 2 x 1.8 x 0.5 m wooden box/frame hybrid once we're done with the exhibition. Where would one even store it? Or maybe we can ship it to South Korea for someone to use for a music video? (4) Ain't my style - but the others like it so.

I did actually contact someone who was able to do made-to-order wooden shelves. Even the cost for the setup is sky-high. If we won't get any approval after this one, I was afraid that we might have to do this event task in another time.

I thought to myself, I couldn't let this opportunity close. I went to Paragon one Thursday night (a late-night-shopping habit I couldn't remove from myself) and observed the space, thinking what would work here that wouldn't break the bank. I thought of an installation with flowers or indoor plants, since (1) It's on trend and (2) It soothes the feeling of being in a congested metropolis.

I consulted with my teammates and my lecturer. Some of them said that we should just rework the first rejected concept. I advised that we could just slip this in the production proposal, see if they will like it or not. It was worth a shot, right?

Turns out, they approved the Indoor Botanics concept. There is no longer a need for us to find and pay for giant cages. No one likes being imprisoned, anyway. If you think about it, the approved idea is kind of the complete opposite of the first one, in its nature.

I went down to Paragon on the 13th of April to inspect the location. We saw the space (if you are familiar with the mall, it's going to be at the space in front of Givenchy, Jimmy Choo, Dunhill, and Loewe), and noted that we must:

  • Change the signage we proposed. (D-7 of the event, Paragon actually lent us 11x acrylic signages from Muji. See Record of May 2017.)

  • Have a carpet installed to not damage the floors.

  • Not put the installations in front of the store doors.
