Yes another term down! I'm so in holiday mood right now. I will have time to refresh and after all the all-nighters!
After the event came to pass, the biggest focus of our lives turned to the Future Fashion Innovators project. Go to this post to discover on what I decided to create for my Portfolio of Work assignment.
Since I wasn't required to do a professional photoshoot, but instead to just present the concept I have in mind, I conveyed the idea I had through digital illustrations. I will make a post focused on how I came up with the illustrations later.
I could easily just do an amateur photoshoot for this project, but I chose not to. The reason is because of the concept. The theme was a surrealistic travel, starring the cities Paris and Tokyo. I believe that I would need so many professional equipments and advanced image processing to be able to really actualise the images I have in my head. and I do not have the advanced skills or luxury of time to organise and implement the plan in such a short period of time.

Since I'm going with a surrealistic, is-it-a-dream-or-reality theme, I took a lot of pop culture cues from works that have the same nature. The first was Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. I read it around March this year and I could honestly say that it was one of the best novels I have ever encountered. In the book, the characters had trouble deciphering whether the events that are happening is a dream or reality, so I tried to translate that sort of impression in the concept.

This particular poster is very based on the book, as the painting of the sea plays a major role in one character's storyline (the Maneki Neko was mentioned once in the book I think, but not in the same storyline. I just wanted a playful accent with a 'come come customers' message as per the origins of the figure) The beach picture is actually from a music video with yet another dream/reality plot in it, but I won't tell from which - just for fun. It was on loop when working on this project though. I also try to have nods to his other works, such as Norwegian Wood, 1Q84, and The Strange Library. You might recognise the elevator from the movie Inception - another dream-or-reality film, specifically the scene where Dom and Ariadne transports to a dream with an elevator.
As for the model, I did not put any specific name since the brand doesn't usually enlist high-profile faces (say, the Hadids) to front their campaigns. As I was drawing, who I imagined was Japanese model Kiko Mizuhara (she also played Midori in the movie version of Norwegian Wood) and a bit of Indonesian actress Chelsea Islan. They both had made appearances as attendees Chanel's no-introduction-needed fashion shows. Having the model Asian was always an obvious choice for me And she has a bob hairstyle since it was the it haircut during the Met Gala earlier this year.
This thread will continue in the next post.
